Family Farmed Since 1928
EST. 1928
Although our hazelnut research, planting, and industry has been fairly recent (over the past ten years), our love for farming is generational. Our family has developed several other local agricultural businesses in blueberries and value-added products. This knowledge base has proven beneficial in soil, irrigation, and future marketing for hazelnuts.
ALL ABOUT HAZELNUTS
A few fun facts about hazelnuts.
Labor is one of the biggest challenges in the agricultural space. Hazelnut farming can be highly mechanized. It is estimated a 60hp tractor and a single operator can farm roughly 300 acres.
Low cost per acre to plant compared to apples.
The market for organic hazelnuts is emerging and growing rapidly.
Ennis
Ennis is a large nut with an oval shape. The kernel is considered to have mild and smooth flavor. Over the last 15 years, Ennis has been the best paying hazelnut grown in the US. The kernel is considered to have a mild and smooth flavor. Ennis acreage has been reduced in the last decade due to low resistance to Eastern Filbert Blight (EFB). According to lead Oregon State hazelnut professionals, Eastern Washington’s dry climate and colder winters mean EFB is not considered a concern in this region.
Sacajawea
Sacajawea hazelnuts are a small to medium sized nut with a round shape. The kernel has a smooth almost sweet flavor. The nut is consistently one of the highest paying varieties. Sacajawea is mostly sold shelled to domestic markets.
